Questions about future of New Hampshire’s presidential primary

LEBANON, N.H. (WCAX) – As WCAX News has reported, experts say New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary could be in jeopardy for the Democrats moving forward. But they also say the Republican presidential primary in the Granite State is not safe either.

New Hampshire’s state Democratic Party defied the national party by going first this year. The DNC’s decision to change the voting calendar was based on the changing demographics of the party.

New Hampshire’s move to go first could cost the state’s delegates a seat at their party’s convention this summer.

“The bigger question is whether Republicans are going to get tired of New Hampshire’s propensity to allow moderates and independents into their primary. So, if the party continues on its journey with Trump and ‘MAGA-ism’ they would probably strip New Hampshire,” said Linda Fowler, a political scientist at Dartmouth College.

Current law requires New Hampshire to go first. But a bill was also introduced last session that proposes a constitutional amendment that the coveted primary will be the first presidential primary of a presidential election cycle.
