Balint highlights Vermont Child Tax Credit program

BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) – There are resources to help Vermonters save money through tax credits– that was the message from Congresswoman Becca Balint who held a discussion in Barre Friday with federal and local officials, as well as various advocacy groups.

Vermont’s Child Tax Credit program was expanded in June, paying eligible families $1,000 a year per child. Balint says these tax credits help reduce income gaps and improve communities.

“But solutions like this, they make space for families, they reduce child poverty, and they again… close a rapidly growing wealth gap in this country. Taxes are an incredible tool for justice,” said Rep. Emilie Kornheiser, D-Brattleboro.

It was also noted that a bill that passed the Senate earlier this week and will be on the floor of the House next week will make it so that FEMA payments in relation to the flooding over the summer will not count toward household income this tax season. Gov. Phil Scott is expected to sign that once it’s through the House.
