Vt. Democratic leaders promise tough talk on education finance reform

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Democratic leaders are promising tax relief after a nearly six percent property tax hike forecast for next year.

A key commission will soon put forward ideas to the Legislature looking for savings in areas like class sizes, teacher health care benefits, and mental health services for students.

Vermont House Speaker Jill Krowinski, D- Burlington, says improving affordability while maintaining educational quality will be her top priority. She predicts tough discussions over the next two years but stresses solutions will require buy-in from all Vermonters.

“There are going to be things that none of us want, but this is our moment. We can’t lose this moment. While it’s going to be difficult, my mission is to make sure we stay at the table, hear from the governor and produce results for Vermonters,” Krowninski said.

Democrats and Republicans will have to negotiate on any solutions as Democrats no longer hold a supermajority that could withstand a gubernatorial veto.
