Rep. Balint calls for federal financial protection

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A leader from our region says you’re now at a greater risk of getting scammed.

Over the weekend, the Trump administration ordered the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to stop much of its work.

That independent government agency is designed to protect people from corporate fraud and scams.

Vermont’s lone representative Becca Balint spoke outside the CFPB to highlight the importance of the agency’s work for Americans.

“Representing all of those folks back home in Vermont that cannot believe that the one place that they are looking to save money is the one place in government that is protecting all of us from the kind of fraudsters and scammers that are in the White House right now,” said Balint.

Balint says the CFPB has returned more than $21 billion to Americans since its founding in 2011.
