SNAP Awareness Day kicks off

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – More than a tenth of Vermonters need 3Squares to put food on the table.

On Thursday, advocates descend on the statehouse to encourage lawmaker support for food security.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – or SNAP – helps 65,000 Vermonters get the food they need.

When COVID-era emergency money dried up in 2023, the majority of households using 3Squares Vermont saw a steep decrease in monthly benefits.

That’s according to the food security advocacy group 3Squares.

They say the program not only benefits food-insecure Vermonters but also farms and grocery stores.

On Thursday, advocacy groups will gather at the statehouse to detail how the legislature can take immediate action to make sure everyone is fed.

They gather at 10 a.m. for a day of awareness.
