MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Will Vermont lawmakers ban phones in school classrooms?
Many school districts already have some type of restriction on students using cellphones but only eight actually ban phones during the school day.
A new pair of bipartisan bills would require all public and private schools to adopt rules on phones during the entire school day. Supporters say the goal is to improve student mental health and remove distractions in class.
“Some permit use of cell phones in between classes or during lunch. That policy is harder to enforce, harder to understand, harder for students to follow,” said Rep. Angela Arsenault, D-Williston.
The bill would also ban school districts from communicating with students over social media. Lawmakers considered a similar bill last year but it never made it past the finish line.
