BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The Burlington School District is projecting a four percent decrease in property taxes for its next budget.
District officials say that while spending increased, so did the district’s need for kids with greater needs like free and reduced lunch and kids who are multilingual — which means they are getting more money from the state.
They also say the strength of the state’s Education Fund and the fact they did not add positions with one-time funds helped significantly as well.
“It is so important for us to finally be able to deliver a budget that is affordable to families,” said Burlington School Board Chair Clare Wool.
The Burlington City Council is looking at the budget at their meeting Monday evening.
They will also consider final wastewater and drinking water bond proposals, along with a general obligation bond, that taxpayers will be voting on on Town Meeting Day.
Democrats are also expected to vote to completely eliminate the cap on police officers.
