Leaders from our region react to death of former President Jimmy Carter

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Leaders from our region are remembering former President Jimmy Carter after his death on Sunday at the age of 100.

In a post on social media platform X, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, said of the nation’s 39th president, “Jimmy Carter, both for what he did as president and in his later years, will be remembered as a decent, honest and down-to-earth man.”

Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, said in a statement, “Jimmy’s commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous future should be an example to all of us, and his kindness and selflessness should be the goal every public servant and every American strives to live up to.”

Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vermont, said in a post on X: “President Carter always led with his values, in service of those who were most in need. His public service did not end when he left offce. His legacy is a reminder of what public service can and should look like.”

In a statement, North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-New York, who is President-elect Trump’s nominee for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Elise said: “America is saddened to hear about the passing of President Jimmy Carter who left a legacy of service to his fellow Americans.”

President Joe Biden has scheduled a state funeral and National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9.
