BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington voters could weigh in on a divisive advisory question in support of Palestine and calling for an end to “Israel’s apartheid regime, settler colonialism and military occupation.”
Community members petitioned to get this in front of the City Council and possibly on next year’s Town Meeting Day ballot.
The question is identical to the one that divided the council and the community back in January when councilors voted to not place the measure on the 2024 ballot.
Those against putting the measure on the ballot said it could stoke anti-Jewish sentiment.
Those in favor said if 5% of voting community members want something on the ballot, the council shouldn’t stand in the way of that.
The city clerk’s office is currently verifying and counting to see if that 5% threshold was reached.
