Vermonters gather to see Statehouse tree lit up for the holidays

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Vermont Statehouse.

People in Montpelier were getting into the holiday spirit on Thursday, as snow fell and children sang, and the tree was lit at the Statehouse.

The celebration included everything from fire spinning to a team of horses taking people for rides to a reindeer.

This year’s tree had grown for decades in front of the Barre American Legion and it will stand in memory of those who serve all holiday season long.

“I am very honored and proud that they have chosen our tree of 24 years that we have grown it and all that. It’s just super exciting and overwhelming all at the same time,” said Shannon Capron, the president of the American Legion Barre Post 10.

After the tree-lighting, people gathered in the Statehouse for cookies and to hear Gov. Phil Scott read “‘Twas the night before Christmas.”
