Working out to work up a Thanksgiving appetite

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – It’s the night before Thanksgiving. Many of you may be prepping for tomorrow night’s dinner in the kitchen, but we caught up with people prepping in the gym on Wednesday night.

“I honestly come to the gym so I can eat whatever I want, and so tomorrow, [I’m] probably gonna have two to three plates, so yeah, looking forward to a big day, and then be back here on Saturday,” said Burlington resident Asmin Mostarlic.

It was a busy Wednesday night at the YMCA in Burlington. Members looking forward to eating big tomorrow got some workouts in tonight. But does working out before the meal really matter? We checked in with a trainer to find out.

“It makes some difference. I mean, you’re not going to change your body in one day, but you could burn enough calories that the ones you put back in, might balance out,” said personal trainer Jervaughn Scales.

Scales also says any workout is a good workout, but if you’re looking to make the most of your time before you hit the table tomorrow, high-intensity interval training or HIIT workouts are the best.

30-40 minute intervals of intense exercise followed by brief recovery will burn the most calories. Feel it out, have fun, and eat lots of turkey after.
