What investigators say led up to Montpelier double murder

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – New details Monday afternoon about what investigators say led to aggravated murder charges against a Montpelier man accused of killing his parents last week.

Court paperwork shows Matthew Gomes, 29, called police multiple times in the early hours of Nov. 15. Police referred him to Washington County Mental Health Services, and they say Gomes hung up on them. There was no in-person contact with Gomes.

Then, at about 11:30 that morning, police say Gomes called them saying he was “going crazy” and “hurt some people.” He allegedly told police he had injured his parents and they were dead.

When police got to the home at 579 Gallison Hill Road, they say they found blood on Gomes, as well as in multiple rooms in the house, including a bedroom and bathroom. Authorities say it appeared bodies had been dragged along the floor. They say they found the bodies of his parents, Jerry and Mary Gomes, partially clothed near a barn behind the house. Police say both had blunt force trauma to the head. And they say there was gasoline near Mary Gomes’ body.

Matthew Gomes is expected in court on Monday afternoon. WCAX will be there and will have an update for the Channel 3 News starting at 4 p.m.
