N.Y. officials offer hiking safety tips

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – New York officials are asking you to be prepared when heading out to the high peaks.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says recreators need snow and ice equipment if they’re going to venture up the Adirondacks because of winter weather conditions in higher elevations.

The department recommends micro spikes or crampons and says high-elevation lakes may look frozen over but are not safe to walk on.
