Adirondack trailhead parking problems persist

KEENE, N.Y.(WCAX) – Tensions remain high over packed parking at popular Adirondack trailheads.

Keene’s town supervisor says some hikers recently hurled insults and threats at stewards at the popular Garden Parking Lot and there was even a full-blown fight between two hikers this past summer.

The lot is notoriously busy on weekends, especially in the fall. Now, the town wants state officials to help find a solution before the next hiking season. “Come up with a new plan. How are we going to safely manage that parking lot so that residents from New York state and visitors can use the trails, residents who live in Keene Valley aren’t buried under an avalanche of cars and trespassing, and our staff up there can be safe and do their jobs,” said Keene Town Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson.

The town of Keene also offers a shuttle service to bring hikers to the trailheads.
