Young UVMMC patients take part in Halloween fun

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Not all children will be able to go trick or treating this Halloween, so staff at the UVM Medical Center brought the fun to them.

Young patients dressed in their favorite costumes and paraded the halls to fill up their candy bags. Staff members had stations set up for kids to grab a sweet treat.

It was put on by the hospital’s Child Life team, whose goal is to give the children a sense of normalcy during tough times.

“it adds a positive experience while they’re here. It can be really traumatizing for kids and their families to be in the hospital. They have a lot of scary stuff that happens and a lot of people that come into their rooms. So, being able to have a little bit of fun and sort of decompress that sort of fear and trauma is really important,” said the team’s Lisa Emerson.

Staff also put together candy bags for the kids who couldn’t make it out of their rooms.
