Burlington Police arrest group connected to April assault

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Police have arrested five people in connection to what they call a violent assault in downtown Burlington back in April.

Burlington Police say two of the men — Abdirahman Mohammed and Ibrahima Bangoura, both 22 — were held without bail this week. According to court documents Mohammed, Bangoura, and the other three men were in downtown Burlington when they got into a fight with a separate group of people. One of the victims told police it was in retaliation for a separate incident where Bangoura’s sister was assaulted.

The other men arrested include: Ayub Mohamud, 23, of Winooski; Shuaib Mohamud, 21, of St. Albans City; and Kalell Picard, 19, of Essex Junction.

Police say the investigation lasted for months and even tied several of the men to homicides and gunfire incidents in Burlington. Mohammed was also charged with a separate fight last week involving one of the April assault victims inside the Old North End Variety Store, where police say he threatened to kill the victim.

Bangoura was also arrested and charged when he was 19 for an August 2021 gunfire incident in the city.

Burlington Police did not respond to requests for an interview Thursday.
