Vt. officials roll out new rules governing assisted living facilities

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The state of Vermont is rolling out new requirements for staff and training at assisted living facilities.

The state has been working for years on the new regulations that update rules around staffing levels and training requirements.

Vermont has the second oldest population in the county and more people are expected to use assisted living care in the future.

The Legislature’s Committee on Administrative Rules on Thursday signed off on the rules. “It’s a range of issues when you talk about how do the staffing regulations, match operational realities and how do you hit that balance between who is available to work at these providers and how do we provide the best quality of care,” said Helen Labun with the Vermont Health Care Association.

She says there are concerns that the new requirements could exacerbate staffing shortages in nursing facilities.
