Court ruling allows N.H. trans teen to play on girls’ team

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A transgender student in New Hampshire is packing her cleats today after a judge’s ruling says she can practice soccer for her high school team.

The families of teenagers Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle filed a lawsuit to overturn the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.

The act, which was signed into law by Governor Chris Sununu last month, requires middle and high school students to participate on the sports team that matches the gender listed on their birth certificate.

Their lawsuit now claims that it violates the constitution and federal law because it discriminates and denies them equal opportunity to education.

Turmelle doesn’t start practice until December, but Tirrell’s family asked for an emergency order so she could join soccer practices starting on Monday.

With just hours to spare, a US district court judge granted that request.

Now, both sides have 14 days to schedule a hearing to keep the state from enforcing the law while the case proceeds.
