Road repairs washed away in Stowe

STOWE, Vt. (WCAX) – State and federal officials were in Stowe just a few days ago evaluating the damage from a June storm. Thursday morning, most of the same areas were damaged again.

North Hollow Road has a hole in the middle after the roadway washed away.

“So again, here we are again. Mother Nature– at the mercy of what she brings,” said Darren Orr of Stowe.

Orr said it was a long night on the mountain.

“It was deafening, deafening rain. Had some flooding at the house and we wake up to this,” he said.

WCAX News talked with Orr earlier this week while FEMA evaluated what was his repaired road following a fast-moving June storm.

“It’s living in Vermont,” he said then. “You gotta deal with Mother Nature sometimes.”

The repair didn’t last long.

“No, we are stuck,” he said. “No other way to put it.”

Just down the road at the North Hollow Berry Farm, farmers are picking up the pieces after getting hit by another storm.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Tony Sedutto of the North Hollow Berry Farm. “A reoccurrence of where it was the other day.”

The June storm hindered access to the “you pick” blueberry farm. That’s not a problem now, but the berries need to be picked before they go bad.

Other back roads in town are also in rough shape.

“Pretty dangerous and scary,” said Augustine Barrows, 5.

Dewey Hill Road is another spot crews patched up just last month that now needs more work.

“This to come in last night– it’s a whole other scale and just decimated the roads,” said Sam Jenkins of Stowe.

But those who made it through the night like Jenkins are making the best out of the situation.

“It’s fun being on a little bit of an island– island vacation,” Jenkins said.

It wasn’t only back roads bearing the brunt of the damage.

“It’s pretty wild, can’t believe it,” said Josh Ventrice of the Topnotch Restaurant.

Crews were working to fix the Mountain Road in Stowe after it separated near the Topnotch Resort, where Head Chef Josh Ventrice says despite the flooding, it’s going to be a busy weekend.

“We got a full hotel. We got a crazy wedding this weekend. So, yeah, just trying to get through it,” he said.

Back on the dirt roads, people said they were thankful for the crews hard at work yet again.

“It’s been a couple hours and the boys are in digging it up and redoing it, so they will probably have it done in no time,” Jenkins said.

“The town has done a great job at recovery but boy these setbacks are pretty major,” Sedutto said.

As for Orr, he says he is with family and friends and just relaxing at home until the road can be built again.
