HARTFORD, Vt. (WCAX) – The Hartford School District is awaiting additional test results after elevated levels of PCBs were identified in certain buildings.
The potentially cancer-causing chemical was located in the high school and adjoining technical center after air samples were taken by state officials. State law requires Vermont schools to be tested for the carcinogen.
The district is now waiting on the results of bulk samples to determine its next steps.
“There are some levels where they just say the world we live in has some contamination and require no action. There are some levels that require immediate action. And depending on what they identify as the source of that potential problem will really determine what we do,” said Jonathan Garthwaite of the Hartford School District.
Air quality tests at the Hartford Middle School did not identify elevated levels.
Hartford’s White River School is scheduled to be tested for PCBs next summer.
