802 News Podcast: Combating Sexism

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – More women serving in the military will result in better decision-making, enhanced readiness, and fewer cases of sexual assault and harassment — that’s the view of Doris Sumner, a 36-year veteran at the Vermont National Guard.

In her book, “Life at Camp: Combating the Sexism We Tolerate and Why the Military Should Take the Lead,” she describes the challenges women face in the male-dominated military and why that needs to change.

In this week’s edition of 802 News, Mark Johnson spoke with Sumner about how she began to better understand the disparate treatment female soldiers endured and the need for more women to join the ranks all serving as the Guard’s equal opportunity and diversity manager, and when Michael Dubie raised awareness after he took over as the Guard’s adjutant general in 2006.
