Vermonters celebrate anniversary of ‘Loving Day’

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermonters are celebrating the anniversary of “Loving Day.” June 12 marks the day when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down all anti-interracial marriage laws remaining in the nation.

Vermont never had a ban on interracial marriage, but in 1967, 16 other states still did until the case of Loving v. Virginia determined they were unconstitutional.

This is the 10th year of Vermont-based Loving Day celebrations.

“We celebrate here in Vermont in part to build a community that creates space for interracial, multiracial, multicultural couples– individuals and families and others who support the right to love who we love and the person of one’s choosing,” said Sarah Brown of Loving Day Vermont.

Zero Gravity brews their own Loving Day Ale for the month with proceeds going to Loving Day Vermont. There is a celebration open to everyone at Zero Gravity on June 12 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m.
