MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas announced that the candidate list for the 2024 primary election is finalized.

The deadline for major party candidates in Vermont to file to be on the August primary ballot was last Thursday.

All of Vermont’s statewide incumbents up for re-election are running again this year, including Republican Gov. Phil Scott U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, and U.S. Representative Becca Balint.

While this is shaping up to be a relatively quiet election cycle, the race for number two is the one to watch.

Lt. Governor David Zuckerman is being challenged by Winooski Deputy Mayor Thomas Renner for the Democratic nomination, and former Burlington city council member Zoraya Hightower is also going after the spot, running as a Progressive.

On the GOP side, Greg Thayer of Rutland and former state senator John Rodgers are facing off.

Independent candidates have until August 8th to file for the November general election ballot.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024
