BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Plans to convert the former Burlington YMCA into housing have hit a roadblock.

Work began earlier this year to remove asbestos and other remediation before the historic building is renovated, but the developer now says structural issues that were discovered could now delay the project by up to a year.

Add to that inflation and the rising cost of construction and officials say the plans for 90 units of housing are also being reevaluated to reduce costs.

The blighted building has been an eyesore for years and was a popular spot for squatters, with police and fire crews frequently visiting the site last year.

Developer Bruce Baker submitted a permit application to the city in January and appeared before the City Council with ambitious plans for the apartments. Now, the plan is to put out another bid, which could mean construction may not begin until sometime next year.
