BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A new bishop has been named to lead the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington.

Monsignor and now Bishop-elect John McDermott will take over for former bishop Christopher Coyne.

Coyne was selected as archbishop of Hartford, Connecticut, and officially began his service there just last week.

McDermott has been involved in the Catholic Church in Vermont since 1989 when he was ordained in Burlington. He’s held many jobs with the Burlington diocese, most recently as director of the Catholic Center at the University of Vermont.

“Our greatest longings are our greatest joy. Everything are found in God. And that’s, I think, what the church needs to continue to proclaim. And I think that that’s my responsibility as a bishop to share that message with everyone that I encounter that God alone is going to be the thing that satisfies the deepest longings of our hearts,” McDermott said.

McDermott’s installation will be on Monday, July 15.
