BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Filmmaker Bess O’Brien tackles difficult topics in her documentaries — substance abuse, eating disorders, domestic violence, the foster care system, the transition from prison back into the community — just to name a few.

Her latest film is no exception. In “Just Getting By,” O’Brien interviews Vermonters struggling but not having enough food and a place to live. The film is profound, moving, heartbreaking, and at times uplifting, as individuals and communities work to help those in need. The honesty, dignity, and resiliency of those who share their story is remarkable, including many who have participated in the state’s controversial hotel-motel voucher program.

In his latest episode of the 802 News Podcast, Mark Johnson spoke with O’Brien about why she takes on such challenging topics, why so many Vermonters are facing food and housing insecurity, and what they’re doing to survive day-to-day.

“Just Getting By” will begin touring local theaters on Friday, March 22nd.
