WOODSTOCK, Vt. (WCAX) – Voters in several Central Vermont communities Tuesday rejected a $99 million bond measure to build a new Woodstock Union High School.

By a vote of 1910 to 1570, voters in the Mountain Views Supervisory Union towns of Barnard, Bridgewater, Killington, Pittsfield, Plymouth, Pomfret, Reading, and Woodstock rejected the measure

The school, which serves grades 7-12, was built more than 60 years ago and officials say water, sewer, and electrical systems are failing.

Since the state no longer funds school construction, taxpayers would have been on the hook for the majority of the bill. With flat enrollment, the district estimates that taxes on a $500,000 home would have increased by roughly $1,500 a year.

District officials have said a “no” vote only puts off the inevitable because the building is not sustainable in the long term.
