CONCORD, N.H. (WCAX) – Despite a lack of snow on local trails, New Hampshire Fish and Game is warning snowmobilers to slow down after a rash of recent crashes, two of them fatal.
The crashes — including one in Pittsburg last week — have mostly occurred in northern areas where there is still snow on the trails. Officials say that while crashes do happen, they are avoidable if riders know their limits and learn how to safely use their machines.
“You have to operate at the existing conditions or what is safe for the existing conditions. And that is really what we are seeing, is that people are, a, inexperienced, or they are operating outside of what would be optimal for those existing conditions,” said N.H. Fish and Game Capt. Mike Eastman.
The Granite State requires all riders under the age of 16 to take a rider safety course. The state also enforces speed limits on designated trails.
