PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Democratic lawmakers in Albany on Monday rejected a new congressional district map for New York and will instead draw their own.

The state’s independent Redistricting Commission approved a new set of maps this month that made modest changes to the current districts, including New York’s 21st District, which Congresswoman Elise Stefanik represents.

North Country Assemblyman Billy Jones said he would rather see a map that splits the North Country’s 21st District right down the middle.

“It would be a better fit for us to be having more representation with the federal government when it comes to infrastructure, border security, everything along those lines,” said Jones, D-Chateaugay Lake.

Monday’s vote sets the stage for Democrats to craft lines that could help them in battleground House races that could determine control of Congress. They’re expected to submit and approve new lines in the coming days.
