HIGHGATE, Vt. (WCAX) – Highgate residents will be voting on a proposed downtown development this Town Meeting Day.

The town purchased a piece of land in 2017 to turn it into a community space. They have now partnered with developer Cathedral Square to build senior housing there.

The town will hold a floor vote on Town Meeting Day to approve the plans and to establish a wastewater system on the property. Officials say the partnership could benefit all Highgate residents in the future.

“It would allow more families to move into Highgate. It will be a $10 million plus building that they put up which they will pay taxes to the town of Highgate on. So, it will decrease the overall tax bills of other Highgate residents,” said Rebecca Manning with the Village Core Master Plan Committee.

Other future plans for the parcel include a downtown center and library.
