ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – One person is dead following a shooting in St. Johnsbury Tuesday night. Vermont State Police remain tight-lipped on many details of the homicide, including the identity of two people who were detained afterward.

Police say it started just before 6 p.m. Tuesday when a passerby called police saying there was a car with bullet holes and a person slumped over inside at a parking lot on Portland St. When police arrived they found a woman dead inside.

“It’s getting out of hand. This isn’t the first shooting we’ve had in this town,” said Harvey Call, who was working at a nearby auto repair shop. He says while he didn’t hear anything, the incident is a shock. “People that have kids, they need to watch themselves. like I said, obviously, they did it at a school so they don’t care where they do it.”

The shooting happened on the grounds of the Cornerstone School, a small independent school off of Route 2, just outside of the center of the town. Police spent most of the day Wednesday collecting evidence from the scene as they tried to piece together what happened. They say the incident appears to be isolated and there is no larger threat to the public. However, two people have been detained on unrelated out-of-state warrants.

“To have something like this happen in public — in a public place, a residential area where there’s businesses and people obviously conducting their daily lives — it’s very concerning,” said VSP Lt. Eric Albright. He would not release any information about the detainees. “Out of the state of Massachusetts. At this time we can’t release any additional information about those subjects.”

They are also withholding the victim’s identity pending an autopsy.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the state police in St. Johnsbury at 802-748-3111 or to submit an anonymous tip online.
