BARTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Investigators say they have identified a suspect in a 2019 homicide in the Northeast Kingdom.
Vermont State Police say Richard Poginy, 37, of Glover, was found with serious injuries after a low-speed, minor car crash in Barton on Nov. 2, 2019. He died a week later.
But investigators said the significant injuries Poginy died of didn’t match the crash. The medical examiner ruled Poginy’s death a homicide caused by “complications of blunt impact head injuries.”
After four years of investigation, detectives now say Brownswell Cedano, 29, of Hartford, Connecticut, assaulted and repeatedly struck Poginy outside a home in Barton and then took off.
Police say Poginy drove away from the scene but crashed a short distance away.
Cedano is currently behind bars in Pennsylvania after being convicted in 2022 of drug distribution in Rutland. It’s unclear when he will be sent back to Vermonter to face a charge of second-degree murder.
